My Roles

UX Planning

Researching and inventing basic UX conventions for VR interfaces. How to display a HUD? How to click a button? Where to put the Close/back buttons?

UX Design

Besides the unique work on VR conventions, I also did the regular UX work for the game: research, specs, flows and wireframes, and user testing.

Graphic Design

Worked with the CPO on the game’s graphic branding, and designed its UI and icons.

Focus on

UX for VR Menus

We didn’t want a conventional menu for this game, those rectangle screens floating in front of the player. We wanted the menu’s interface to be all around you.

The immersive experience of the Racket game itself sets the tone for the menu, it should invite players to explore and interact with their surroundings rather than simply staring straight ahead.

1
Main Menu

The menu items should surround you, be very clear and clickable, and it all needs to be dramatic and space-themed.

You’re standing on a platform, the space around you is the canvas for the menus.
Menu Appears
With you in the center, huge distant planets and stars appear all around you. Those are the options of the main menu.
Pointing & Hovering
We’ve used the laser pointer VR convention. Hovering on a star makes it bigger and bolder.
Scrolling

Turning around; so the most important option is in front of you, and the rest surround you.

Sub-Menues

Clicking on a star makes it bigger, and it becomes the background for its sub-menu.

Sub-menu Appears

Much closer to you, tilted a bit to be easily read and fun to interact with.

Selecting
Clear and engaging hover, click to select.
Back/Close Button
After much thought, we’ve decided to unify the back button across the game, and use the VR controller’s back button.
3
Playing the Game
Transition from menus to game
The main menu fades away, and a big dome is built all around you, creating the game’s arena. This builds anticipation and allows you to focus before the game starts.
Transition from game to menus
When the game ends, the dome shatters around you – it’s a dramatic moment, you’ve just lost or won the game. You’re back in outer space.
4
Results Screen

The results screen appears in front of you, no matter where you’re facing. This is the new ‘front’.

Information Layout
This screen has lots of information, divided into section. Each section is placed at a certain distance and position according to its importance.
Action Buttons
Appear just in front of you, positioned with the same height and tilt as a stand-up work station.
5
Back to Main Menu

After closing the results screen, the Main Menu once again appears around you.
